The New York Jets had the worst defense in the league and in franchise history in 2021. To help keep that trend from continuing, they’re adding a veteran cornerback who will hopefully make an impact.
Per Jets insider Rich Cimini, the Jets are bringing back defensive back Lamarcus Joyner for the 2022 season. Joyner was with the Jets in 2021, but was limited to nine snaps due to a triceps tear he suffered early on.
Despite being signed to play safety last year, Joyner has the versatility to play cornerback – a position they sorely need help in. However, it looks like the Jets plan on deploying him at safety once again.
They probably need him there anyway. Star safety Marcus Maye is expected to leave the team when free agency opens up next week.
Lamarcus Joyner, 31, won the starting job opposite Marcus Maye, but lasted only 9 snaps (triceps tear). He was excited about returning to safety after playing nickel for Las Vegas. Provides some flexibility as the #Jets rebuild at safety.

LaMarcus Joyner was a second-round pick by the St. Louis Rams in the 2014 NFL Draft. He played five seasons for the Rams before going to the Raiders in 2019, signing a four-year, $42 million deal.
In eight NFL seasons, Joyner has 421 tackles, 21 tackles for loss, six QB hits, five sacks and four interceptions in 96 games.
If he can stay healthy, he can be an asset for the Jets and their last-place defense. But their work is far from over.
The Jets need to prioritize their pass rush and defensive backs this offseason. They’ll have that chance with tons of cap space and four top 40 draft picks.
