Since the Washington Commanders traded for quarterback Carson Wentz in March, nearly every analyst has an opinion on the move, and most are not favorable.
There are those like former NFL wide receiver Torrey Smith — Wentz’s former teammate — who believe the Commanders found their man in Wentz.
Unfortunately, most criticize Wentz as if he’s JaMarcus Russell, Heath Shuler, or Ryan Leaf. Sure, Wentz has some issues, but criticizing him now feels more like what some feel they are supposed to do. Some who ridicule Wentz go more on what they’ve heard rather than what they’ve seen.
The latest slight toward Wentz comes in the form of Madden NFL 23. Throughout the week, EA Sports has released ratings for different positions. Terry McLaurin and Jonathan Allen were among the best at their positions for the Commanders, but not Wentz.
When quarterback ratings were released Friday, Wentz came in with a 73 overall rating — the No. 26 quarterback.
Wentz was behind Mac Jones, Baker Mayfield, Trevor Lawrence, Jameis Winston, Tua Tagovailoa, Teddy Bridgewater, Jalen Hurts and Justin Fields. You could make a strong case that Wentz is better than each of those quarterbacks.
While some players will publicly gripe over their Madden rating, don’t expect that from Wentz. One of the biggest criticisms from his time in Philadelphia was that he had thin skin, meaning he couldn’t handle criticism.
After four months in Washington, Wentz doesn’t appear to be worrying too much about what is being said about him.
