In two seasons with the Carolina Panthers, head coach Matt Rhule has fallen well short of expectations. Ahead of his third year at the helm, Rhule addressed the growing speculation that he’s under pressure to deliver a quick turnaround.
In an interview on Wednesday, Rhule made it clear that his primary goal is to make the team better. He believes that the Panthers have made and will make the necessary moves to succeed.
“If you’re a coach in the league and you don’t feel the pressure to win every year, if you don’t feel like, ‘I’ve got to improve the team,’ then what kind of coach are you? I want to make the team better,” Rhule said, via the Panthers team website. “And I want the fans to have something. It’s been a while since we’ve had a team that’s better than what we are right now. The only pressure I feel is to be really really good for our players, for our coaches, for our fans. So I think we’ve done the staff right, now we’ll do the Combine right. Free agency, we’ve re-signed a couple of our own players. Now we’ll continue to do that. Be active as much as can in the free-agent market, and hopefully have a good draft.”
Rhule is 10-23 in two seasons with the Panthers. But the bigger issue that fans tend to harp on is his inability to find the right quarterback.

In his two seasons at the helm the Panthers have tried their luck with Teddy Bridgewater, PJ Walker, Sam Darnold and even tried to run it back with Cam Newton. All of those quarterbacks flashed promise but ultimately couldn’t deliver.
Whether Matt Rhule wants to acknowledge it or not, the pressure is on in 2022. And with so much uncertainty at quarterback, the Panthers can go in any number of ways this offseason.
A third straight season with five wins or fewer could spell the end for Rhule.
