The 2022 NFL Draft was a wild one to say the least as it had people throwing their hands up in the air in confusion within minutes of starting. But Mel Kiper Jr. believes that the 2023 NFL Draft might be even crazier.
Appearing on The Adam Schefter Podcast, the ESPN NFL Draft analyst predicted that there will be over six quarterbacks taken in the first round of next year’s draft. He went on to identify a number of quarterbacks that could go in the first round next year.
That would be an unprecedented number of quarterbacks taken in the first round. The only draft that would compare is the 1983 NFL Draft which saw seven quarterbacks go in the first round.
But with top tier prospects like Bryce Young, C.J. Stroud, Spencer Rattler and D.J. Uiagalelei among others, there will certainly be a plethora of options. The real challenge will be finding teams that actually want to draft one.
ESPN draft analysts @MelKiperESPN, along with @McShay13, set the over/under for quarterbacks to go in the first round of the 2023 NFL draft at 6.5. And Kiper is going with the over.

The NFL is a supply and demand industry at every position and this draft demonstrated that the demand for quarterbacks is low. Teams that look shaky at the position were happy to wait until the middle and late rounds – and only for a backup.
Kenny Pickett, who the Pittsburgh Steelers drafted 20th, is the only quarterback that projects as a Week 1 starter. And he might not even start Week 1 if he doesn’t beat Mitchell Trubisky in training camp.
There are bound to be a few teams that want to go in another direction at QB next year. But it would be stunning if that number was greater than six.
Is Mel Kiper being too bold here? How many quarterbacks do you think will go in the 2023 NFL Draft?
