The rookie’s intangibles have stood out just as much as his physical skillset throughout training camp
Washington Commanders rookie CB Mike Sainristil stood out to me Sunday during Washington’s first open practice to fans. It wasn’t because of how he played in coverage or against the run; his intangibles stood out significantly, and I don’t think anyone came close to the effort he provided on every single rep. Sainristil chased down every ball carrier through the whistle and didn’t stop running until he got his hands on them.
It was impressive enough that I wrote a couple of sentences in my Sunday practice notes. “It tells the story of who this kid is,” Candi Waller of BowieTV Sports talked about another instance where his effort led to a chase-down fumble of running back Brian Robinson in Tuesday’s practice. “He slowed up and got relaxed with the football. Mikey ran him down and forced the fumble. The play wasn’t over.”
Waller raised an excellent question in the midst of her response. Was that a symptom (Brian Robinson’s relaxed demeanor) of past years? Hopefully, Sainristil’s effort was an eye-opener for Robinson and the rest of the team!
