The Morgan State Bears lost another close game to the UAlbany Great Danes on Saturday 17-23 in double overtime. The Bears are on a three-game losing streak with all three losses being decided by 10 points or less.
Junior defensive lineman Elijah Williams and this Bears defense did all they could to put this game away in regulation. They would hold the Great Danes to 10 points in regulation and 258 yards of total offense. The Bears would also force five fumbles recovering three and getting an interception. Williams himself had 10 tackles, four tackles for loss, two sacks, and a forced fumble.
Morgan’s offense remained stagnant all game aside from an eight-play 65-yard drive in the second quarter that resulted in the only Morgan touchdown in regulation. No matter how many extra possessions they were given they just couldn’t get anything going. The Bears’ offense rushed for a total of 45 yards averaging 1.2 yards per carry. Sophomore Domonique Anthony started and finished the game at quarterback. This would mark the first time a quarterback has started and finished a game for Morgan all season. He would go 18/39 for 147 yards and two total touchdowns.
In the fourth quarter with 1:01 left on the game clock, Albany was up 7-10. In an attempt to run Morgan’s two timeouts off the Great Danes would hand the ball off to Faysal Aden. Aden would be met in the backfield by Junior defensive lineman Elijah Williams and it was recovered by Morgan at the Albany 28. Morgan got the ball with 58 seconds on the clock and in two plays the Morgan offense was on the one-yard line. After two zero-yard rushes the Bears found themselves at third and goal on the one with no timeouts. After a five-yard penalty and a field goal, the Bears would tie this game at 10-10 and send this game into overtime.
In overtime, the Bears started with the ball. After multiple complete passes and Albany defensive penalties, Dominique Anthony ran it in from one yard out to put the Bears up for the first time in the game 17-10. From that point on Morgan’s defense who had been shut down all day gave up two touchdowns to put the Great Danes up 23-17. To finally put an end to this game Morgan would go four and out on a one-yard gain and three incomplete passes solidifying a UAlbany victory 23-17.
