Could New York Giants running back Saquon Barkley be on the trade block this offseason?
NFL.com’s Adam Rank thinks that Barkley should be dealt since Jones needs to be developed more without having to worry about a feature running back.
In fact, Rank thinks that it would be better for the Giants to have Devontae Booker get the carries.
“I know the running back position doesn’t carry the value it once had. And to be honest, the market for a running back coming off two injury-ravaged seasons isn’t great,” Rank writes. “The Giants need to be choosy about which skill players stay around to start the Brian Daboll era. It’s obvious Saquon is talented, but Daniel Jones should be given a chance to develop without having to worry about featuring a running back. And full disclosure, I would be willing to give Kenny Golladay and Evan Engram, a free agent this offseason, another shot.”
“Moving Barkley to a team that needs a little juice at running back makes a lot of sense, especially considering Devontae Booker, who was more efficient than Barkley in 2021, is under contract for cheap through 2022.”
The Giants would be taking quite the risk if they moved Barkley. If he gets back to his regular form, he’s a top-five running back in the NFL and is a weapon both running and receiving-wise.
Barkley has rushed for 1,000+ yards in two of his four NFL seasons, while Booker’s career-high is 612.
If Barkley can’t get it together in a new scheme, then it could be time to move on, but the organization will still likely give him at least one more shot this year.
