NFL insider hints new contract could be coming for Commanders WR Terry McLaurin

January 8, 2025 by Redskins Wire

Terry McLaurin made history on Sunday. The sixth-year wide receiver broke Ricky Sanders’ 36-year record for single-season touchdowns, leading the Washington Commanders to a 23-19 win over the Dallas Cowboys.

McLaurin did it in the best possible way, catching the game-winning touchdown from quarterback Marcus Mariota with only three seconds remaining. It caps off a phenomenal season for McLaurin, whose previous career-high was seven touchdowns, which he set back in his 2019 rookie season.

That’s what a difference a franchise quarterback can make. McLaurin and Jayden Daniels were so good together that both made the Pro Bowl. McLaurin’s final numbers for 2024 were 82 receptions, 1,096 yards, 13.4 YPR, and 13 touchdowns. He did all this while, again, not having a difference-making receiver opposite him.

It wasn’t unusual to see McLaurin with a smile after games, even if he caught just one pass for five yards. McLaurin has always been about the team, which makes him one of the most unique superstars in the NFL. The 2024 season saw Washington finish 12-5, which McLaurin discussed. It was the first time the franchise finished with a winning record since 2017.

McLaurin will play in his second career playoff game on Sunday against the Buccaneers.

This season may not be the only good news coming McLaurin’s way. According to NFL insider Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated, the Commanders could be working on a new contract for McLaurin.

It’s fair to say he might have something else—a new contract—coming his way soon, too.

McLaurin, 29, signed a three-year extension worth $71 million, with $28 million guaranteed in July 2022. That contract runs through next season. It makes sense that general manager Adam Peters would want to reward not only one of the NFL’s best receivers but also a respected team leader and voice in the community. Additionally, no player embodies head coach Dan Quinn’s culture more than McLaurin.

Whenever Washington’s season ends, Peters’ job will be building around Daniels and, if Breer is accurate, ensuring McLaurin is around for years to come is step one.
