NFL Playoff Picture: The Washington Commanders can move up to the 6th seed this week

Playoffs!

The Washington Commanders entered their bye week knowing that they could not move up or down from their 7th seed in the NFC, but they could get some help getting to the 6th seed. Green Bay’s loss to the Detroit Lions moved Washington within a game of the Packers. The Commanders can move up to the 6th seed next week with a win on the road against the New Orleans Saints, and a Packers loss to the Seahawks. Washington would hold the conference tie breaker(6-3 vs 4-5 NFC). Go Hawks!

Washington could get up to the 5th seed the following week, but they’d need a Vikings losing streak, and a big win over the Philadelphia Eagles. We’ll look into that more next week if they take care of business in New Orleans, and Minnesota somehow loses to the Bears on Monday night.

The Detroit Lions and Philadelphia Eagles both won again and will keep the 1 and 2 seeds respectively if they keep winning. The Lions won a tough division game on a short week, while the Eagles struggled at home to beat the Carolina Panthers.

The Washington Commanders are 8-5, and holding off most of the weak NFC. The Los Angeles Rams moved into 8th place after their win, and losses by the Arizona Cardinals and Atlanta Falcons on Sunday. The Rams are 7-6, but they can’t move into the 7th seed with a win and a Washington loss this week. Washington would hold the conference tie breaker(5-4 vs 5-5 NFC), and would need to lose two, and two Rams wins, to drop out of the 7th seed.

15. New England Patriots (3-10) — eliminated

16. Las Vegas Raiders (2-11) — eliminated

Note: In the five-way tie between Cleveland, Jacksonville, New York, Tennessee, and New England, divisional tiebreakers first drop the Titans (loss to Jaguars) and the Patriots (common games tiebreaker to Jets). The Jets then drop behind the Browns and Jaguars due to the conference record tiebreaker and the Browns finish ahead of the Jaguars due to head-to-head. Then it’s the Jaguars and Jets, where Jacksonville wins a head-to-head tiebreaker. The Jets and Titans go head to head after that, and New York beat Tennessee. The Titans beat the Patriots, so they are next.
