Sam Darnold’s trade value has gone way down since the start of this past season.
Per Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated, the perception of Darnold seems to be at an all-time low. If Carolina is to deal him and get a new starting quarterback, it may have to eat some of his cap hit.
“One player I talked to a few people about was Panthers QB Sam Darnold,” Breer wrote. “His value has cratered, and it sure seems like Carolina might need to eat some of his money to deal him.”
Darnold started for the Panthers this past season but struggled mightily. He did have to miss time, but when he came back, he didn’t improve his numbers that much.
He finished the season with nine touchdowns and 13 interceptions on 2,527 yards passing. That’s not good enough for a team that tries to have playoff aspirations each year.
When Darnold went down, the team was forced to play P.J. Walker along with Cam Newton which also didn’t work out.
Head coach Matt Rhule has also declined to name Darnold his starter for next season, which has raised questions about what Carolina’s plan is. These next several weeks may be crucial for the Panthers’ search for a new quarterback.
