The San Diego Padres are making a hard push to sell two of their priciest position players.
According to MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand, the Friars are “aggressively shopping” first baseman Eric Hosmer and outfielder Wil Myers. As he noted, Hosmer has four years left on his contract while Myers will make $20 million in 2022.
Per sources, the Padres are “aggressively shopping” both Eric Hosmer & Wil Myers.
Hosmer:
* 4 years/$60M left on deal
* Limited no-trade (can block deals to 10 teams)
* can opt out after ’22
* 10-5 rights after ’22Myers:
* owed $20M in ’22
* $20M ’23 club option ($1M buyout)— Mark Feinsand (@Feinsand) March 13, 2022
Since signing a head-scratching $144 million deal four years ago, Hosmer has hit .269/.324/.423 for the Padres with a league-average 100 weighted runs created plus (wRC+) and 0.7 WAR, per FanGraphs. The 32-year-old shouldered the burden of Twitter’s wrath.
I wouldn’t really call the Padres aggressively shopping Hosmer, they’re aggressively seeking to purchase a lack of Hosmer.

Padres have been trying to dump Hosmer on someone for the last 3 offseasons https://t.co/7TeOU0m6Jo

Good thing the NL has the universal DH so Hosmer can truly hone in on his craft of absolutely mashing ground balls to short https://t.co/NdDG4gr9GR

Myers, meanwhile, hasn’t exceeded 500 plate appearances in a season since tallying 30 home runs and 20 stolen bases in 2017. Neither player is exactly a hot commodity.

San Diego won’t find a line of eager suitors offering much to land Hosmer or Myers. However, a deal is possible if general manager A.J. Preller is willing to eat salary or add a prospect as an incentive.
If that’s the case, Twitter users identified some potential landing spots.
Myers would fit nicely as a backup OF/platoon bat against lefties for the Red Sox if San Diego ate a ton of cash https://t.co/QzS8nSIELx

On this episode of things that would never happen, the Tigers kill two birds with one stone and absorb Myers salary for a year, add a much needed OF, and get a nice prospect in return. https://t.co/OBL0ug9IYo

Pirates should take one to buy a prospect. Can serve as 1B/DH too https://t.co/1rJCexgFM7

Cubs’ payroll right now is at ~$138.2M, giving them just over $90M of space this year with just five long-term guaranteed salaries. Don’t want to get too greedy, but they can easily set themselves up well in these negotiations. https://t.co/wOBrWg52AO

Because Myers has a 2023 club option with a $1 million buyout, he’s a more reasonable candidate for a rebuilding squad. Getting someone to take four years of Hosmer would be a tougher sell unless San Diego really made it worth their while.
