The PGA Tour is attempting to crack down on what fans are yelling at tournaments across the country.
Earlier this month, the PGA Tour announced that fans who yell “Brooksy” at Bryson DeChambeau will be escorted out of the tournament.
“The barometer that we are all using is the word ‘respect,’” PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan said, via TMZ Sports. “And to me, when you hear ‘Brooksy’ yelled or you hear any expression yelled, the question is, is that respectful or disrespectful? It has been going on for an extended period of time, and to me, at this point, it’s disrespectful. And that’s the kind of behavior we’re not going to tolerate going forward.”
Former professional golfer turned sports media personality Paige Spiranac has made it clear that she’s not a fan of yelling at tournaments.
“I will say I have never stood in a crowd at a golf tournament and had someone yell, ‘mashed potatoes’ or ‘Brooksy’…that would not turn me on in any way possible. Nothing,” she said on the most-recent episode of her Playing A Round podcast.
Spiranac has been harsh on DeChambeau at times, but no one likes to be taunted, especially when competing at the highest level.
The fan chants will surely break out at the Ryder Cup later this month, though.
Few settings in golf – if any – are rowdier than the Ryder Cup.
