The Carolina Panthers reportedly have interest in Baker Mayfield. However, he may not be the quarterback the NFL franchise ends up acquiring in a trade.
The Panthers have the No. 6 pick in the 2022 NFL Draft. They might spend it on a quarterback, like Malik Willis or Kenny Pickett. But there’s a chance they instead use it on an offensive lineman.
In such a scenario, Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer believes the Panthers would then try and acquire Jimmy Garoppolo from the San Francisco 49ers.
The Mayfield interest, meanwhile, is reportedly being pushed by the Browns and doesn’t accurately reflect the Panthers’ offseason plans.
Albert Breer seems to believe that if the Panthers draft an OT at 6, they could look to trade for Jimmy Garoppolo after the first round.
He thinks that Baker Mayfield would be redundant to Sam Darnold and the Browns are pushing more for it than the Panthers are.

That doesn’t necessarily mean the Panthers won’t target Mayfield. But it sounds like Garoppolo is higher on their preferred list.
Say what you want about the veteran Garoppolo, but he knows how to win football games. He’s taken the 49ers to two NFC Championships and one Super Bowl in three years.
The reality is the Panthers need to win now for Matt Rhule to keep his job past this season. Garoppolo probably gives the team the best chance.
