Patrick Mahomes Reveals His True Feelings On Tyreek Hill Trade

April 18, 2022 by The Spun

Patrick Mahomes celebrates with Tyreek Hill.

The Kansas City Chiefs caught football fans off guard by sending Tyreek Hill to the Miami Dolphins last month. Super Bowl contenders don’t often trade franchise cornerstones in their prime, and yet the trade broke on the same day rumors emerged of a possible split.

Patrick Mahomes may have not been completely blindsided by the departure of his former top wide receiver. However, according to NFL Network’s James Palmer, the quarterback admitted to feeling some instant surprise by the news.

“Obviously my initial reaction was a little bit of shock even though you knew that this was a possibility,” Mahomes said.

While he said he’ll miss Hill on and off the field after building a friendship during their five seasons together, Mahomes is also glad Hill gets to live in Miami after receiving a substantial payday.

“But you’re happy for him,” Mahomes said. “He got a great contract and obviously he’s back where he has a house in the offseason and around a lot of his family and stuff like that. I wish the best for him.”

Rather than lamenting the loss, the 2018 MVP quickly shifted gears to getting acclimated with new wide receivers JuJu Smith-Schuster and Marquez Valdes Scantling.

“For me, it was, ‘We got to keep rolling.’ It’s how it is in this league,” Mahomes said. “It’s as much a business as much as it is about your friendships and stuff like that. So, we know in order to have success in this league you have got to evolve and keep getting better. I got with these new receivers as quickly as possible and try and build that so we can have success when we get going this year.”

Mahomes and Hill each made the Pro Bowl in all of their four seasons as starting teammates. Hill compiled 46 total touchdowns from 2017 to 2021, so no single player is going to replace the speedy wideout in Kansas City.

It’s a tough loss for Mahomes, but the superstar quarterback will try to bring a new-look offense back to the AFC Championship Game.
