Patrick Mahomes and Tyreek Hill formed one of the NFL’s premier passing combinations during Hill’s time with the Kansas City Chiefs. So how did he feel when Hill was suddenly traded to the Miami Dolphins?
Speaking to Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated, Mahomes admitted that he was more surprised when he first learned that the Chiefs were considering a trade in the first place. He said he was kept in the loop once things got into high gear. Nevertheless, he was still a bit shocked when the trade finally happened.
“It more surprised me whenever it got to the point where we were really considering trading him,” Mahomes told Breer. “They kept me updated the entire time; I knew the extension talks were going on. And then I knew when he got the permission to seek to get traded. But I mean, still, I played my entire career with Tyreek, so definitely, there was a little bit of shock when he got traded.”
In Mahomes’ five NFL seasons no receiver has caught more touchdown passes from him in the regular season than Hill. The six-time Pro Bowler has caught 41 of Mahomes’ 151 regular season touchdowns. Travis Kelce comes in second with 34.
“That’s the reason I signed the contract that I did and that’s the reason that I know I’m gonna be in Kansas City for my entire career, because I have great people around me.”

It will be interesting to see what the Chiefs offense looks like now that Tyreek Hill is gone. Hill missed only six games in his six years with the Chiefs, but his speed opened up the playbook in ways few other receivers could.
2022 will tell us all just how replaceable – or irreplaceable – Hill really is to Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs.
What kind of impact will losing Tyreek Hill have on Patrick Mahomes next season?
