Percy Butler signs 1-year extension with the Washington Commanders

The Washington Commanders have signed safety Percy Butler to a 1-year extension per Tom Pelissero. There were no details on the value of the deal. Earlier this offseason, Washington extended another safety who is a special teams standout during the offseason, keeping All-Pro Jeremy Reaves on the team for another year.

Butler was a fourth round pick in the 2022 draft, and is one of a shrinking group of Ron Rivera draft picks left on the team. He was mainly used on special teams during his rookie season, but started 13 games the following year. Under the new coaching staff, led by head coach Dan Quinn, Butler started 5 games, and his special teams snaps went back up.

Butler goes into his second season with defensive coordinator Joe Whitt Jr, and will be working to get more playing time on defense. The Commanders signed Will Harris in free agency and added UDFA Robert McDaniel after this year’s draft. Quan Martin will return as a starter, but there will be opportunities to get on the field this season with the departure of Jeremy Chinn in free agency.. Butler will also be a core player for special teams coordinator Larry Izzo.
