Position group battles are underway with the start of training camp. Can the remaining draft picks of the Rivera era hold on to one of the final 53 roster spots?
Football is back! Training camp practices for the Washington Commanders begin today, but what also begins are weeks-long position-group battles for players in various stages of their careers. For example, defensive tackle Phidarian Mathis has missed 23 out of a possible 34 games since being drafted by Washington in the second round of the 2022 NFL draft. Mathis hopes to establish he can stay healthy and provide value in Washington’s run defense as a situational lineman. Wideout Olamide Zaccheaus, a veteran free agent that Washington acquired this off-season, brings several things to the table from a skills standpoint that GM Adam Peters and OC Kliff Kingsbury would love to have in their receiver room. However, can Dyami Brown, who has been drastically underwhelming to this point in his career, bring his best punch and make a statement over the next few weeks?
It’s open season in Washington; there are not many solidified starters on the team, despite what the coaching staff hopes some of their guys could develop into. There’s an opportunity for several under-the-radar players to emerge and earn impactful roles on this team.
