HBO’s new Los Angeles Lakers show, Winning Time, based on the Showtime Lakers book by Jeff Pearlman, premiered on Sunday night.
The show prominently features Magic Johnson, who led the Showtime Lakers era in Los Angeles.
HBO’s new show opens with Magic Johnson at the doctor’s office, presumably learning about his HIV diagnosis. Magic learned about his diagnosis about one month into his marriage to his wife, Cookie Johnson.
“It was hard because I loved her so much and I hated to hurt her,” Magic told Gayle King. “I’ve played against some of the best basketball players in the world, right? I’ve been in championships. I’ve been in nine [NBA] Finals, so I know pressure. But there was no greater pressure than driving home to tell her.”
Magic received the devastating news in 1991. His wife, Cookie, was pregnant at the time.
“The key moment was when Cookie took the test and the results came back that her and the baby was fine,” Johnson added.
Thankfully, Johnson has continued to live a happy life. To this day, his longtime wife, Cookie Johnson, has stood by his side through it all.

Magic and Cookie Johnson have three children together – EJ, Elisa and Andre. The happy couple has known each other for more than 40 years.
They also recently celebrated their 30th anniversary.
HBO’s Winning Time will air on Sunday nights at 9 p.m. E.T.
