The United States qualified for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar last night, returning to the tournament after missing it in 2018. They’ve received a ton of props since last night and can now add the President of the United States to their supporters.
Taking to Twitter, President Joe Biden congratulated the USMNT on qualifying for the World Cup. He complimented them on their long road back and said he’s excited to have them representing the US later this year.
“Congratulations to the @USMNT for bringing the United States back to the men’s World Cup! I know it’s been a long road back. Jill and I are thrilled to have you representing our country later this year,” President Biden tweeted.
Biden was serving as Vice President under President Barack Obama when the United States last appeared in the World Cup. The USMNT wound up reaching the Round of 16 before losing to Belgium in extra time.

The USMNT failed to qualify for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia after a disastrous final Matchday in CONCACAF qualifying. A massive shakeup of US Soccer ensued.
Executives were hired and fired, veterans who had helped the US reach the 2014 World Cup were not called back, Gregg Berhalter was brought in as the head coach and a major infusion into creating a youth movement.
The end result has played out over the past year: A CONCACAF Nations League title last summer, a Gold Cup win two months later and several huge wins over longtime rivals Mexico and Costa Rica during qualifying.
The draw for the 2022 FIFA World Cup will take place tomorrow in Qatar.
