Quick notes as Commanders set to Open training camp

July 25, 2022 by Redskins Wire

It’s time for training camp for the Washington Commanders.

The Commanders will be holding their training camp in Ashburn at their team facilities. Both rookies and veterans are to report Tuesday, July 26.

First Day

There will be no on-field activities other than running and conditioning. The first day will be primarily limited to physical examinations, meetings, and classroom instruction. Helmets or protective shirts are prohibited. There will be no footballs, plays, walk-throughs, individual player instruction or team drills.

Players are protected so much more than they were just 20 years ago in NFL training camps. Washington fans will recall the Marty Schottenheimer 2001 season where he early in camp sent a message that the 2001 team would need to be more physical, launching the famed “Oklahoma Drill”.

Ron Rivera and his staff will not be utilizing that drill, as it is strictly prohibited from all NFL teams. The drill is one of several (Bull in the Ring, OL/DL In-Line Run Blocking/Board-Drill, Half Line/Pods/3-Spot) not permitted during training camp or any other time during the NFL season.

Joint practices between NFL teams are also limited to a maximum of four joint practice days for teams playing three or more preseason games.

The Physically Unable to Perform List is always an important distinction made at the opening of training camps. When an NFL team designates a player on this list, the designated player is prohibited from training camp practices. Once a player has practiced (even if only for a few minutes) he cannot be placed on this list.

Chase Young, Chase Roullier and Logan Thomas are considered to be the primary candidates that could possibly be placed on this PUP list. Teams can choose to transition a player on the PUP list to the active roster at any time they so desire.

Roullier suffered a fractured fibula October 31 against Denver. The next Washington game (November 14) against Tampa, Young tore an ACL. Thomas was injured against the Raiders on December 5. He had torn his ACL and both meniscus ligaments in his left knee needed to be repaired.

The All-22 replay of the Logan Thomas injury does not make it look any better. Ngakoue spots the sift block early and holds his position instead of working down the line to close the gap. Then goes very low. pic.twitter.com/mepj1rZvXY

Heinicke sacked, but worse part is C Chase Roullier gets a body on his leg late, looked really bad. Has been playing such good football this year too pic.twitter.com/PvmMrqTR6w
