Friday marks a huge day in the Deshaun Watson legal drama that has now been going on for almost a year.
The 26-year-old Houston Texans quarterback currently faces 22 civil cases and 10 criminal complaints of sexual assault and misconduct. Later today, a grand jury in Harris County, Texas will review the evidence of Watson’s case and decide whether or not a criminal offense will come as a result.
Depending on the results of this hearing, some new doors could be opened for Watson later this afternoon.
According to reports from NFL insider Jonathan Alexander of the Charlotte Observer, the Carolina Panthers are “absolutely” interested in trading for the star quarterback if his legal situation is cleared up.
The Panthers, who just finished up a disappointing season with QB Sam Darnold, have reportedly been in contact with the Texans organization about what a potential deal for Watson would look like over the past month.
While the Carolina organization may be interested in Watson, that feeling may not be mutual. With a no-trade clause on his current contract with the Texans, he’s able to control his destiny as far as approving trade destinations — and reports from earlier this year indicate that he didn’t want to end up in Charlotte.
If the Panthers are able to swing a deal, they’ll likely have to beat out several other teams in search of an improved quarterback situation this offseason.
