Report: Chiefs Named Fit for Top NFL Trade Candidate

June 26, 2025 by Last Word On Pro Football

The Kansas City Chiefs could reportedly trade for top NFL trade candidate Cole Kmet before the 2025 regular season begins. The Chiefs are still on the hunt to find the next successor after Travis Kelce, and they might have to do it sooner rather than later. Kristopher Knox of Bleacher Report believes Kmet could be a fit for the Chiefs, and they should acquire him now to serve as a complementary option, ensuring they have their No. 1 tight end already on the team when Kelce eventually retires. It’s easy to see why the Chiefs could try to move on as Kelce turns 36, and they wouldn’t want to risk one more long-term deal for a veteran who’s coming off one of his worst seasons last year.

This isn’t to say Kelce hasn’t been dominant for consecutive years, but unfortunately, all great things must come to an end. An option and name that’s been in several rumors, Kmet, will likely be in a uniform before the season begins due to the potential rise of Colston Loveland, who they took in the first round of this year’s draft. This should tell you that the Bears are probably preparing to trade Kmet. Originally selected in the second round of the 2020 NFL Draft, the former Notre Dame product became one of the main contributors to this Bears offense, recording 258 receptions for 2,592 receiving yards and 19 touchdowns.

However, the Chiefs won’t be the only team targeting Kmet as he will likely receive plenty of interest from teams once the Bears officially place him on the trade block.

Report: Chiefs Named Fit for Top NFL Trade Candidate Cole Kmet – 3 Other Possible Fits

Potential Destinations

Los Angeles Chargers

The Los Angeles Chargers could consider trading for a weapon like tight end Cole Kmet since he’s more of a dynamic pass-catcher than Tyler Conklin and Will Dissly. The Chargers have failed to secure a superstar talent for quarterback Justin Herbert so far this offseason, despite having ample cap space. The team can’t afford to rely on Quentin Johnston, who is still developing, and a washed-up veteran like Mike Williams. Unfortunately, it looks like this new offensive roster will only go so far as a wild-card again, like they did this year.

Even though they want to run the ball, they can’t ignore mortgaging their future on the receiving corps. 2024 draft pick Ladd McConkey is the only set of reliable hands, and Tre Harris is untested. Herbert thrives when slinging it to his tight end receivers, and he could probably find chemistry with Kmet.

Washington Commanders

Meanwhile, the Washington Commanders will need to start thinking about the future themselves after Zach Ertz. Despite re-signing him to a one-year deal, he doesn’t provide a lot of longevity for quarterback Jayden Daniels‘ pass game. Being that Kmet is younger and has several years ahead of him, he could serve as a capable difference-maker in the aerial attack.

Dallas Cowboys

Unfortunately, tight end Jake Ferguson will need to prove to the Dallas Cowboys this season that he is their long-term option. He’s entering the final year of his contract, and while it’s easier to extend it by at least a year, they don’t have the financial means to pull it off as they’re worrying about Micah Parsons’ next deal and others in 2026. If he doesn’t improve this season, he could sign with another team next offseason.

Luckily, if they could, they may want to trade for someone like Kmet, which gives this tight end unit a bit of a reset ahead of Luke Schoonmaker and John Stephens.
