REPORT: Colts Cut Struggling Former Second Rounder – Who Could Take a Chance?

March 8, 2025 by Last Word On Pro Football

colts cut raekwon davis

The Indianapolis Colts will cut defensive tackle Raekwon Davis after just an atrocious one-year stint with the team. According to reports, the Colts are releasing Davis since he didn’t make much of an impact on the Colts defensive trenches. Originally selected in the second round of the 2020 NFL Draft, the former Alabama product came into the league spending the first three seasons with the Miami Dolphins but his sophomore campaign didn’t go as planned after being placed on the injured reserve for the beginning of the 2021 season. However, he got back to the lineup hoping to carve out a name for himself, but most of his work was done in the line of scrimmage.

Davis isn’t the hottest free agent on the market considering there other options like Jonathan Allen. However, he could earn himself a backup job with any team that needs depth in the defensive tackle department this upcoming season. Davis was attempting to make some type of impact as a rotating defensive lineman with others like Grover Stewart and DeForest Buckner. He felt confident about the role since that’s the scheme that fits into his style after the Colts were depending too much on the line of scrimmage.

However, plans didn’t work out with the Colts so now Davis could earn himself at least a one-year deal with these five teams.

Next Possible Teams

Washington Commanders

After releasing Jonathan Allen, the Commanders still need some type of replacement. Daron Payne could handle his own as long as Jer’Zhan Newton can step up. The team may draft a defensive tackle but they could sign Davis on a one-year bargain even though the Commanders have money to spend. Newton had a mediocre postseason after jumping offside in some moments which the team can’t afford to happen.

New Orleans Saints

Meanwhile, the Saints don’t have the cap space for the biggest name so this is more of a logical fit. New Orleans is looking into trimming the roster to save their financial situation and that could include releasing Tyrann Mathieu and Cameron Jordan. Chase Young will be in a new uniform and as the defensive line is getting younger, the Saints are better off giving Davis a chance in the trenches.

Dallas Cowboys

Jerry Jones said he won’t be aggressive in free agency but they should at least sign a few to help bolster the depth. They have yet to agree on a contract for Micah Parsons but the good news is that they’re bringing back Osa Odighizuwa on a major extension. Davis could be a solid backup as another body for Odighizuwa to slow down the pace of each game.

Baltimore Ravens

For the Ravens, it’s hard to imagine this defensive line survives with Nnamdi Madubuike as the only dependable guy to fill the gaps. Travis Jones and Broderick Washington have promising futures but this Ravens defense lacks experience after losing Jadeveon Clowney last offseason. Davis won’t do much but getting him on the line alongside Madubuike could increase the production for the Baltimore defense.

Los Angeles Chargers

If anyone can bring out the best in Davis, it’s the Los Angeles Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh. He loves winning ball games in the trenches and did well raising the free agent stock for Teair Tart and Poona Ford after signing one-year deals last year. While they’ll likely sign the best defensive lineman now that they have money, they could use Davis as a potential bargain gem to see how he could excel in rotation.
