Sam Cosmi Presser: “I guess I’m sticking around for a while”

September 5, 2024 by Hogs Haven

Sam Cosmi talks to the media after signing a contract extension

Sam Cosmi finally got the contract extension that many people expected him to get after a very good year at guard last season. The Commanders announced a 4-year extension that’s reportedly worth $74 million with more than $45 million guaranteed. Cosmi said that he’s blessed to get a new deal, and to be playing at the level that warrants it. He wants to be one of the top guards in the NFL, and he’s been working on that since switching to the position from tackle full-time last season. Even though he got paid, Cosmi said he knows he still has to prove it every day.

Cosmi was asked about possibly testing his value with other teams, but he said the atmosphere is different in this franchise now. He really likes what new general manager Adam Peters and head coach Dan Quinn are doing to improve the team, and everyone feels the change. He’s looking forward to protecting a really special dude in Jayden Daniels for the next five years. Cosmi said it was a weight off of his shoulders to get this deal done, and he just wants to focus on the season. He expects a fist fight with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the season opener on Sunday afternoon.

Weight off his shoulders:

Cosmi says the contract is a weight off his shoulders but wouldn’t have let it affect him during the season if it didn’t get done.

Being a top guard:

Sam Cosmi: You separate the money from the job because “you still have to do your job.” He said he has responsibilities that he has to do and he wants to be one of the best so that’s his motivation and it will make him work even harder. #NFL #RaiseHail

Sam Cosmi feels way more comfortable and fitting in his role as a guard. Has the mentality that he wants to be one of the best in his position. That doesn’t change now. It only makes him more determined

Proving himself every day:

Sam Cosmi earned this contract extension.

Life changing money for him and his family.

But, today he said this will force him “to work even harder.”

I asked Sam about that mindset of feeling like he still has to prove his worth.

— John Keim (@john_keim) September 4, 2024

Cosmi said he still has to prove himself every day. The contract doesn’t mean that he’s arrived, he said. He still has to go out every day and do his job. “I’m going to keep grinding, doing what I’m doing.”
