Despite rampant rumors of Sean McVay leaving the sidelines for the broadcast booth, the Los Angeles Rams head coach will return to defend their championship.
On Wednesday, McVay spoke to reporters over Zoom, per Ryan Dunleavy of the New York Post, about turning down a lucrative offer from Amazon. Although he’s not ruling out a future in broadcasting, the 36-year-old said he wasn’t ready to make the switch yet.
“Just the timing and everything that surrounded it, it’s very flattering. I’m humbled by it,” McVay said. “To say that down the line that [broadcasting] is not something I’m very intrigued by would not be accurate, but I’m totally committed to coaching.”
McVay added that “coaching and working with people that you love” provided him with a purpose that a commentary job couldn’t.
“I’ve always been drawn to the game and what a cool opportunity to stay connected, but you aren’t totally connected in a lot of ways that bring you that joy,” McVay said. “You don’t miss some of the bad feelings that accompany being a head coach, too, but I finished this season probably as refreshed and rejuvenated as I’ve ever been.”
According to the New York Post’s Andrew Marchand, Amazon offered McVay a five-year, $100 deal to join its Thursday Night Football booth. He’ll instead look to become the first back-to-back Super Bowl champions since the New England Patriots won the 2003 and 2004 titles.
