Spencer Rattler Opens Up About What Happened At Oklahoma

March 3, 2022 by The Spun

Oklahoma freshman QB Spencer Rattler drops back to throw.

Spencer Rattler will look to turn the page with South Carolina after his 2021 season went haywire in Oklahoma.

This time last year, Rattler sat atop the world as a Heisman Trophy candidate poised to go high in the NFL Draft. He instead got benched during the season for Caleb Williams, who will reunite with head coach Lincoln Riley in USC.

When speaking to media on Wednesday, via Matt Howe of 247Sports, Rattler discussed the “crazy whirlwind” of his time in Oklahoma.

“Last year, things went how they went. I couldn’t control it,” Rattler said. “I feel like as a player I was doing fine enough. We were undefeated at the time. I guess it wasn’t enough. I can’t control that. I am just happy to be here now.”

The 5-0 Sooners ranked sixth in the nation entering last year’s Red River rivalry showdown with Texas. After falling to a 28-7 deficit in the first quarter, Riley benched Rattler for Williams, who sparked a 55-48 comeback win.

Getting a new start under former Oklahoma assistant coach Shane Beamer, Rattler said he feels “refreshed” and “very comfortable” in South Carolina, per FOX’s Matt Dowell.

Rattler also praised the program’s pro-style system, which he feels is teaching him more than his former program.

“I have learned probably more in a month than I have in my college career,” Rattler said. “With these pro-style systems and the film we are watching, I think it elevates everybody’s games on the team. Mentally and physically on the field.”

Although his Oklahoma run didn’t go the way he planned, Rattler doesn’t seem to regret where the path took him. He has a new opportunity to elevate the Gamecocks, who are coming off a 7-6 season in Beamer’s first year as head coach.
