For the first time since 2004, the Pittsburgh Steelers will start the season without Ben Roethlisberger on their roster.
Historically, the Steelers look to build through the draft. But according to Pro Football Network’s Tony Pauline, the team has a few QB targets in free agency this offseason.
Pittsburgh reportedly “loves” Liberty’s Malik Willis. And they’re also “targeting free agent QBs Mitch Trubisky, Teddy Bridgewater, and Jameis Winston.”

Willis is seen as perhaps the draft’s biggest boom-or-bust prospect. At 6-foot-1, Willis is the shortest of the projected first-round quarterbacks, and also has the lowest completion percentage of the bunch as well.
That said, Malik Willis is well-built with a huge arm and has the potential to be dynamic in the designed run game.
Meanwhile on the free agent market, Mitch Trubisky and Teddy Bridgewater are decent options. But Jameis Winston is the most intriguing. This isn’t the first time Jameis has been linked to the Steelers.

Similar to Big Ben when he was younger, Jameis is a bigger-bodied QB with a penchant for being a home-run hitter. While the turnovers have always been a question with the former No. 1 overall pick, he appeared to clean that up under Sean Payton this past season with a 14:3 TD-INT ratio.
The Steelers have floated the idea that Mason Rudolph could be the starter next season (which produced a collective groan in Pittsburgh). But frankly, all of the potential options listed above would be marked improvement.
