“Surprise” NFL Blockbuster Trade Could Happen?

April 9, 2025 by Last Word On Pro Football

cole kmet trade

One surprising NFL trade could happen during the draft involving Cole Kmet this offseason. According to a report, Kmet’s job could be on the line as the Chicago Bears may look for a tight end to potentially replace him. Originally selected in the second round of the 2020 NFL Draft, the former Notre Dame product began his spent his entirety in Chicago as many did project him as a top tight end prospect. Kmet’s job could be in danger, especially if the Bears are embracing the rebuild for quarterback Caleb Williams while making several free agency moves to improve its offensive line.

Speaking of the offense, head coach Ben Johnson will likely bring his old philosophy that did benefit Sam LaPorta from the Detroit Lions. Many think it could work well for Kmet in Chicago, but it might not be the case as many rumors have been linking tight end Tyler Warren to the Bears for several weeks. Questions could come around regarding Kmet’s future if the Bears decide to select him, but either way, it’ll be interesting to see who they keep in this new regime. They haven’t made an offer to bring back wide receiver Keenan Allen, so that could signal that the Bears will want to start over.

It’s an interesting story development that may occur over the next weeks. If the Bears do put Kmet on the trade block, here are three teams that may pursue him.

“Surprise” NFL Blockbuster Cole Kmet Trade Could Happen? – Chiefs, Chargers and Commanders Logical Fits

Life After Travis Kelce

Veteran tight end Travis Kelce will be coming back with the Kansas City Chiefs for what will likely be his last season in the NFL. It was a disappointing end to the Chiefs’ 2024 campaign in an embarrassing Super Bowl loss, which led to speculation that Kelce could move on. However, this might be their vengeance season, so Kelce will return, but the Chiefs should prepare for the future without him. Kansas City is in a weird place when it comes to their wide receiver department since Xavier Worthy and Rashee Rice can’t seem to stay out of trouble.

Quarterback Patrick Mahomes didn’t play up to his standards last season, so he needs another consistent pass catcher. While Marquise Brown is returning on a one-year deal, the Chiefs would benefit from Kmet’s presence as a long-term threat. He has hands and size similar to Kelce, which could carve out a role similar to the chemistry he had with Mahomes. Kmet may never be the next Kelce, but he has the power to be the next full-time starter for the Chiefs.

Other Potential Fits

Despite signing Tyler Conklin, the Chargers might need another tight end and move on from Will Dissly. He could be on the chopping block since Conklin will be giving them competition. Kmet is the better tight end in this unit and could keep Conklin as a back while trading for Kmet as their starter.

Zach Ertz may be returning, but they may have to start thinking about life after him. John Bates is only capable when it comes to being a run blocker. Ertz is only on a one-year, and Kmet gives them a long-term upside pass catcher.
