Taylor Heinicke praises Carson Wentz after latest Commanders' win

November 21, 2022 by Redskins Wire

You’d think it’d be awkward for Washington quarterback Taylor Heinicke around the locker room when he sees Carson Wentz. After all, Heinicke has taken Wentz’s job, at least for the time being, winning four of his five starts since Wentz was injured in Week 6.

However, since the Commanders traded for Wentz in March, he’s proven to be a good teammate. His teammates like and respect him. Heinicke has gone on the record multiple times to discuss his positive relationship with Wentz.

In an interview with the “Pat McAfee Show” last week, Heinicke said if Wentz returned to the lineup once healthy, he’d do everything in his power to help him. And he meant it, too. Heinicke is happy to be here. As it’s often said about him, he plays like every game; every snap will be his last.

How does Sunday’s news change the dynamic between him and Wentz? After Washington’s win over Houston, Heinicke was asked about it and again praised Wentz.

“It’s got to be tough for him,” Heinicke said of Rivera’s QB decision. “I get it. And it’s nothing; I feel like it’s nothing he did wrong. It’s a weird circumstance. But he’s done a great job. He’s in every meeting. He’s helped me out in any way he can. He’s in my ear when I get to the sideline. He’s trying to help me out. He’s a great leader for this team. And I don’t see that faltering with what  Ron just said. So he’s a great teammate, a great person. And he’s someone that you want in the locker room.”

There are six games remaining on Washington’s schedule. If the Commanders keep winning, Heinicke will keep playing unless he is injured. If he struggles and Washington loses a couple, Rivera likely doesn’t hesitate to give Wentz another shot.

Heinicke and Wentz have both shown good leadership qualities in different ways this season.

The Commanders host the Atlanta Falcons in Week 11.
