Washington quickly fills the roster spot opened by Terry McLaurin’s holdout
The Washington Commanders announced several moves before their first practice of this year’s training camp. Both of the moves in the first announcement this morning were expected. Sam Cosmi had surgery in January after tearing his ACL in a playoff win over the Detroit Lions. He’s been hitting all the markers, and head coach Dan Quinn said that returning for Week 1 is on the table. He was placed on the Active/Physically Unable to Perform List, and will continue rehabbing for an early season return.
We have made the following roster moves:
– Placed G Sam Cosmi on the Active/Physically Unable to Perform List
– Placed WR Terry McLaurin on the Reserve/Did Not Report List— Washington Commanders (@Commanders) July 23, 2025
Terry McLaurin’s holdout has been a top story for the Washington Commanders and the NFL this offseason. He started skipping practice during OTAs, and has continued to stay away from the team. McLaurin didn’t report to team headquarters yesterday for his physical, and will start getting fined $50k for every day he misses. He has one year left on the extension he signed in 2022, and is looking for a deal that keeps him in line with the rapidly rising salaries of top wide receivers in the league. Adam Peters and Dan Quinn said they were going to do everything they can to get a deal done, but that hasn’t happened yet, so the holdout continues with McLaurin’s first missed practice this morning.
McLaurin was placed on the Reserve/Did Not Report List, opening up a roster spot. The Commanders already had a player lined up to take that spot, and they announced the signing of WR Tay Martin an hour later. He was an undrafted free agent after the 2022 draft, and started his NFL career with the San Francisco 49ers. Martin(6’3”, 185lbs) is a familiar face for GM Adam Peters to bring into camp for the 90th roster spot. He spent three years with the 49ers, and then signed with the Tennessee Titans last year. Martin has been a practice squad/special teams player during his time in the league, and his chances of making it through training camp are slim.
