Texans GM “Absolutely Open” to Star Free Agent Return – Chargers, Commanders, Saints Likely to Intervene

Texans General Manager Nick Caserio is open for star free agent Stefon Diggs to return to the team before he hits free agency. According to several sources, the general manager is leaving the door open for Diggs to return so he said they will keep an open mind. Originally selected in the fifth round of the 2015 NFL Draft, the former Maryland product became one of the most elusive wide receivers playing alongside veteran Adam Thielen as a full-time starter for the Minnesota Vikings. Diggs was the man responsible for the “Minneapolis Miracle” play that got the Vikings into the NFC Championship. However, after a trade to the Bills, he became one of the fastest players to surpass 100 catches with Buffalo, leading with 127 receptions for 1,535 receiving yards.

The tenure came to an end last offseason for the Bills where the team sent Diggs to Houston where they immediately restructured his contract that puts him on track for free agency next month. It was a “prove it” season for the veteran but the plans fell through after tearing his ACL. The injury is hindering his stock value so he will likely sign another one-year deal even if it’s not with the Texans to prove he can stay healthy. Despite the roadblock, Diggs is still a dependable pass catcher who’s able to put up big numbers when he’s out there in the aerial attack so he should have some type of market.

Help for Herbert’s Offense

The Los Angeles Chargers have a promising roster but they will only get better if head coach Jim Harbaugh brings in a few capable pass catchers for quarterback Justin Herbert. The team had to survive without a consistent wide receiver for the majority of the season while Ladd McConkey is the latest wideout that’s becoming Herbert’s fan-favorite weapon. Quentin Johnston will probably be cut this offseason since he hasn’t been able to remain reliable for Herbert to thrive in the passing game. Meanwhile, Joshua Palmer will become a free agent so they would need more than a superstar wideout but the good news is that they have money to burn.

Perhaps, they could give Diggs a lucrative two-year deal to pair with McConkey on the slant route plays. Last season, the passing game was torn apart to the point they had to bring in Jalen Reagor to give Herbert another target. It’s time for the Chargers to make a splash move to give some relief to McConkey.

Other Fits

Many should expect the Commanders to find a reliable wideout to pair with Terry McLaurin. He had one of the most phenomenal wide receivers for second-year Jayden Daniels’ offense. However, as Noah Brown and Olamide Zaccheaus are free agents, it’s better to find the superstar wideout to boost their chances for a Super Bowl run. Diggs might not be the same player but he’s easily the best replacement for that No. 2 spot to give McLaurin some support in the deep attack.

For the Saints, no matter who the quarterback will be, the wide receiver position should be one of their priorities too. Chris Olave has an uncertain future and the Saints don’t have the financial liberty to pay for the top-notch talent. Perhaps, they could sneak in a deal for Diggs to sign with them if they get a new promising quarterback.
