Earlier this week, the Houston Texans officially announced their starting quarterback for Week 1 of the 2021 regular season.
Houston will be starting veteran quarterback Tyrod Taylor on Sunday against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Of course, that announcement led to questions about star quarterback Deshaun Watson.
Watson is in the midst of over 20 lawsuits from women alleging sexual misconduct against him. With that in mind, the Texans made the decision to start Tyrod at quarterback.
On Wednesday morning, Texans general manager Nick Caserio further drove home the point that Watson won’t be playing this weekend. In an interview with Sports Radio 610, he said he “wouldn’t anticipate” Watson playing.
“I wouldn’t expect him to play,” Caserio said. “I wouldn’t anticipate him playing this Sunday and we’ll recalibrate as we go.”
Texans’ GM Nick Caserio this morning to Payne & Pendergast on @SportsRadio610 regarding Deshaun Watson’s status for Sunday’s opener vs. Jacksonville: “I wouldn’t expect him to play. … I wouldn’t anticipate him playing this Sunday and we’ll recalibrate as we go.”

Recently, Caserio opened up on Watson’s potential availability to the team heading into the 2021 season.
“Each day we’re gonna make the decision we think is best,” Caserio told reporters. “Again, it’s a one-step process. Deshaun’s been here every day. He’s been in training camp every day. He’s been in the building, he’s been in meetings, he’s been around his teammates. We’re gonna take it one day at a time.
“I’m not going to get into a lot of speculation about what has happened, what didn’t happen. It’s a waste of everybody’s time, quite frankly, I think there’s more important things to talk about. We’re gonna take it one day at a time, we’re gonna do what we feel is best for our team and organization. I would say there’s no finite answer, no definitive answer here at this point and that’s how we’re gonna handle it.”
Houston opens the 2021 season against the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. ET.
