Who will start at quarterback for the Washington Commanders in 2023?
Last week, CBS Sports reported that the Commanders are telling prospective offensive coordinator candidates that Sam Howell is the team’s plan for quarterback in 2023. Howell, a fifth-round pick in 2022, flashed in Washington’s season-ending blowout of the Dallas Cowboys.
Realistically, the Commanders are saying that Howell will have a legit chance to win the job next season, competing with a veteran to be signed later.
Could that veteran be Derek Carr? Carr, who was benched by the Las Vegas Raiders late in the 2022 season, is available for trade. However, Carr has a no-trade clause and can essentially force the Raiders to release him. If that happens, would he be an option for the Commanders?
DraftKings released some odds this week on notable players who are either free agents or available via trade this offseason.
The New York Jets lead the way for Carr at +400. Where are the Commanders? They come in at No. 5, with +900 odds.

The four teams ahead of Washington are the Jets, Indianapolis Colts, Tennessee Titans and New Orleans Saints.
If Carr did indeed land with the Commanders, he would come in as the unquestioned starter. While Washington may be interested, the Commanders will likely balk at Carr’s price tag, making him an unrealistic option.
What about Tom Brady?
Yeah, that’s not going to happen. But Washington did make the list, coming in with +2000 odds, which was No. 10. The top four options presented some familiarity for Brady: The Buccaneers, Raiders [with Josh McDaniels], San Francisco [his childhood team] and a return to the Patriots.
