Bill Belichick and the New England Patriots have made some eyebrow-raising picks in this year’s draft.
With the No. 29 pick on Thursday, the Pats selected Chattanooga offensive lineman Cole Strange — a player that many draft analysts predicted as a later-round draft pick. In Round 2, Belichick and the New England front office traded up to take Baylor wide receiver Tyquan Thornton with the No. 50 overall pick. Thornton was widely projected as a fourth or fifth-round wideout option.
In Rounds 3 and 4, the Patriots finally addressed their needs at the cornerback position, selecting Houston’s Marcus Jones (No. 85) and Arizona State’s Jack Jones (No. 121). The team also picked up South Dakota State running back Pierre Strong Jr. (No. 127).
The Patriots made another curious pick at No. 137, selecting Western Michigan quarterback Bailey Zappe.

Belichick and the Patriots have also selected South Carolina running back Kevin Harris (No. 183) and Northwest Missouri State defensive tackle Sam Roberts (No. 200).
