The Washington Commanders have reportedly traded a conditional 7th round pick the the Cleveland Browns for kicker Cade York. The team had been having a kicker competition since they released free agent signing Brandon McManus after he was accused of sexual assault. Ramiz Ahmed was quickly signed to get through offseason activities. Riley Patterson was later claimed off waivers from the Jaguars and won the initial competition, but missed three field goals during two preseason games

The Washington Commanders were expected by many to wait until the trade deadline to claim a kicker off of waivers. They hold the #2 spot on the waiver order, and will maintain that spot through Week 3 of the season. That puts them behind only the Carolina Panthers, who currently have Eddy Pinero as their kicker, The Panthers released his competition two weeks ago, and they look like they’re going into the season with Pinero.

General manager Adam Peters apparently didn’t want to take a chance that Carolina wasn’t in the kicker market, and pulled the trigger on a low-cost trade. Peters and new special teams coordinator Larry Izzo now get extra time to work with, and evaluate, their new kicker before the season starts. They will have him for this week’s practices, and Sunday night’s preseason finale against the New England Patriots.
The Washington Commanders haven’t announced the trade yet, but it will be announced after the deal is officially done. They didn’t wait to release Riley Patterson, ending the kicker competition for now. His roster spot was filled by newly-signed safety Sheldon Redwine. When the trade becomes official, Washington will have to make another roster move to open up a spot on the roster.
