The Yankees Were ‘In Touch’ With 2 Prominent Free Agents

April 11, 2022 by The Spun

The New York Yankees didn’t make too big a splash in the free-agent market ahead of the 2022 season. But that doesn’t mean they didn’t try.

Brian Cashman revealed on Monday afternoon that the Yankees were in contact with two prominent free agents during the offseason: Carlos Correa and Freddie Freeman.

The Yankees didn’t extend any contract offers, though. Correa wound up signing with the Minnesota Twins. Freeman, meanwhile, is now in Los Angeles playing for the Dodgers.

For whatever reason, the Yankees never made any official offers to either top free agent.

“Brian Cashman on free agents the Yankees missed: ‘We never made an official offer to Correa or Freeman, but we were in touch with their reps on what they were looking for,’” WFAN Sports Radio tweeted.

A Yankees lineup with either Correa or Freeman would have been lethal. Oh well. It’s probably good for the sport as a whole that neither signed with New York.

To make matters worse for the Yankees, though, they failed to extend slugger Aaron Judge. He will become a free agent next offseason. He’s already admitted he plans to have discussions with the entire league, including the Yankees.

“At the end of the year, I’m a free agent now,” Judge said to reporters Friday, via SI.com. “Talk to 30 teams. The Yankees will be one of those 30 teams.”

The Yankees are off to a 2-1 start to the 2022 season. They’ll next battle the Toronto Blue Jays on Monday night.
