Tigers Impress on the Road Against Bearcats Despite the Loss

September 7, 2024 by Maryland Sports Blog

Towson Tigers were bested by the Cincinnati Bearcats this past Saturday in Cincinnati. The final score was a lot closer than some people probably anticipated: the Bearcats 38- Towson 20. The loss puts Towson at 0-1 for the second time under coach Shinnik. Overall the Tigers fought hard against a Power 5 conference team. This is definitely what you want to see out of a team wanting to make a name for themselves outside of their conference.

Cincinnati got on the board early with a Brendan Sorby rushing touchdown from 2 yards out. Towson answered with a field goal after recovering a muffed punt to make it 7-3. The Bearcats stretched the lead to 11 with a 42 yard touchdown pass from Brendan Sorsby to Xzavier Henderson. Sorsby added another long touchdown to Sterling Berkhalter for 61 yards to go up 21-3.

Towson’s offense got it rolling in the 2nd as Carlos Davis hit Jaceon Doss for 76 yards to make it 21-10. Sorsby added another on the ground for his 2nd rushing touchdown from 12 yards out to make it 28-10. Carlos Davis threw his second touchdown to John Dunmore for 28 yards. Keegan Vaughn hit another field goal to bring it to 20-28. Evan Pryor put the game out of reach with a 64 yard run to make it 35-20. A field goal from Carter Brown capped the scoring for the day to make the final score 38-20

Both Davis and Sorsby both had 2 passing touchdowns on the day and no interceptions. Davis went for 244 yards on 21 completions while Sorsby went for 383 on 22 completions. The Tigers used a balance run game led by Devin Matthews and co which racked up 213 yards on the day. Cincinnati leaned on Evan Pryor to carry the load and he responded with 105 yards on 4 attempts with a touchdown.

Jaceon Doss and John Dunmore each had a touchdown a piece for the Tigers. Xzavier Henderson had a huge day as he had 107 yards and 7 receptions for a touchdown. Sterling Berkhalter and 70 yards on 2 catches for a touchdown.

Defensively for the Tigers, Shakeef Amith led the team with 9 total tackles on the day. Daniel Raymond and Dion Crews-Harris were able to get in the backfield and make big plays. Raymond was able to force a fumble and recover it and Xavier Terry was able to grab one for himself.

The Bearcats got a ton of pressure in the Towson backfield. Jared Barlett and Kam Wilson both had a sack. Barlett had 2 tackles for loss on the day. Antwan Peek Jr, Simeon Coleman both had TFL’s. Darian Varner recovered a fumble for the Bearcats. The Bearcats defense did enough to keep the Tigers at bay and pulled it out in the end.

A look ahead to this weekends match up

The Battle for Greater Baltimore is here. The Tigers return to Johnny Unitas stadium for a matchup with their Baltimore rivals, the Morgan State Bears. The Tigers own a 6 game win streak over the Bears dating back to 2011. Towson leads the overall series with 22 wins in 28 games.

The Bears are coming off a 30-28 win over Hampton on the road. The Bears used a potent running game which featured a ton of depth. Myles Miree with 68 yards on 15 touches and 2 touchdowns. JJ Davis and Jason Collins each added a touchdown for good measure. The Bears rushed for 283 yards compared to throwing for just 75 yards.

Sophomore quarterback Tajh Smith returns to lead the Bears offense. The Bears defense was able to get a few takeaways in their first game: a Jadon Carter INT and a fumble recovery by Arturo Mattocks. Jeremiah Wynn had 6 tackles on the day for Morgan State. They also added in some TFL’s from Joseph Murray and Nana Asante.

The Tigers will look good extend their winning streak over the Bears and get their season back on track. GO TIGERS
