Tigers Upset New Hampshire

October 6, 2023 by Maryland Sports Blog

Towson’s offense comes to play as Tigers upset Wildcats

Tigers win! A huge upset win on the road in overtime to give Towson a critical win in a young season and should give them confidence going forward. The offense came to play all day and they got the job done when it mattered most.

Nathan Kent had a massive day as he went 21-34 for 252 yards and 5 touchdowns. Kent did throw a pick, but his offense performance was enough to give the Tigers the win. He is the first Towson quarterback since Tom Flacco to throw for more than 4 touchdowns in a game.

Kent spread the ball around to Carter Runyon, Lukkas Londono, Daniel Thompson and Zay Perkins had 2 touchdowns. Runyon led the Tigers with 83 yards receiving. On the ground both D’Ago Hunter and Devin Matthews went for over 100 yards. Matthews was able to punch one in for a touchdown.

Defensively the Tigers did not force any turnovers and did not seem to create much pressure. They were led in total tackles by Dorian Davis and Charles Peeples with 9 tackles a piece. They did get sacks from Dion Crews-Harris and Jakari Patterson. The defense was able to hold off enough for the Tigers to get the win

The Wildcats seemed to have a good day on offense as well. Max Brosmer passed for 340 yards and 2 touchdowns. Caleb Burke and Kyle Lepkowski were each a recipient of a touchdown. Dylan Lube had a big day for the Wildcats as he had 92 yards on the ground and added 2 scores.

Defensively, Noah Stansbury picked off Nathan Kent for the games only turnover. Ryan Toscano and Bryce Shaw led the team in tackles with 12 and 10 respectively. Toscano added a sack and a tackle for loss. The Wildcats do not play this week and will host Albany next week.

Next on the docket for the Tigers is a matchup with Albany at home for Homecoming. The win over New Hampshire should help give them some momentum going forward.

The Great Danes come into this matchup with a 3-2 record, with wins over Fordham, Morgan State and Villanova. Their 2 losses are to Hawaii and Marshall, who they barely lost to.

Albany’s quarterback is sophomore Reese Poffenbarger, who is a native of Middletown, MD and a graduate of Middletown High School. So far he has been having a great year with 915 yards and 10 touchdowns. He has 2 interceptions to go along with that. Poffenbarger seems to also use his legs at time with 97 yards and 2 scores.

On the ground, Nate Larkins and Griffin Woodell seem to get a majority of the touches. Woodell has 2 rushing touchdowns on the year and is tied with Poffenbarger for the most on the team. Through the air, Poffenbarger has been spreading the wealth as 7 different receivers have a least 1 touchdown. Currently, Griffin Woodell leads the team with 3 touchdown receptions while Julian Hicks and Alexander Roy have 2 touchdowns each.

Defensively, they are an opportunistic and hungry defense. They’ve accumulated 24 sacks on the year so far, with Anton Juncaj and AJ Simmons with 9 and 7 sacks respectively. Dylan Kelly leads the defense with 56 total tackles and will look to add to that this weekend. In the secondary, Amari Hall has 3 of the 6 interceptions for the Great Danes this year.

The Tigers will need to bring some more of that offense from the New Hampshire game. They will need to be lights out on defense and make Albany beat them on the ground. If they limit turnovers and convert their chances, they could walk away with another win. Kickoff time is set for 4pm from Unitas Stadium. GO TIGERS!
