Top 5 Cooper Kupp Team Fits

January 23, 2025 by Last Word On Pro Football

cooper kupp team fits

Here are the top 5 Cooper Kupp team fits this upcoming postseason if the Los Angeles Rams decide to trade him. According to ESPN, the veteran playmaker wants to continue playing football but he is “unsure” if he will be in a Ram uniform next season. Originally selected in the third round of the 2017 NFL Draft, the former Super Bowl MVP currently holds the league record for both receiving yards in the regular and postseason. However, his role with the team has diminished with the team so that means the likelihood could come as early as the next league year which begins in March when free agency opens.

Releasing Kupp would help relieve the Rams’ salary cap, freeing $15 million if the team designates him as a post-June 1 release. With that, the team may still trade him since he was the subject of those rumors earlier this 2024 campaign. The emergence of Puka Nacua as the primary receiver and the Rams getting younger could lead the team to build a new regime under the Sean McVay era. However, “frustrating” could be the word that best explains Kupp’s season, especially ending the playoff loss on a bad note, recording just 61 receiving yards from five catches.

Next Possible Destinations

Baltimore Ravens

After a brutal divisional-round loss, the Baltimore Ravens should be in the market for a new wide receiver. The Diontae Johnson experiment didn’t work out and the team had to rely on Rashod Bateman and Nelson Agholor since losing WR1 Zay Flowers. However, tight end Isaiah Likely held up his own but veteran Mark Andrews didn’t come through and was costly in their loss. Perhaps, Kupp may not be a No. 1 receiver anymore in the league but he’s an upgrade over Bateman to help Lamar Jackson thrive better in the deep threat to form a ferocious duo with Flowers.

Kansas City Chiefs

This would be a no-brainer for the Kansas City Chiefs depending on how the upcoming free agency plays out. With DeAndre Hopkins and Marquise Brown set to become free agents, if they lose both, they should look for veteran help to assist rookie Xavier Worthy and Rashee Rice. Before trading for Hopkins, the Chiefs were looking to bring in Kupp but the price was too high. Perhaps, if the Rams decide to release him, he should be able to sign a lucrative one-year deal to accommodate Patrick Mahomes’ pass game.

Los Angeles Chargers

Head Coach Jim Harbaugh loves the ground game but he understands he didn’t put quarterback Justin Herbert in the best position to win a ball game in the postseason. Rookie Ladd McConkey is becoming Herbert’s favorite but he could use some mentoring. Quentin Johnston is a probable cut candidate so they should be in the market for a wide receiver either way before drafting one. Kupp has everything that Harbaugh could be looking for as a perimeter receiver.

Washington Commanders

If any team has a great situation going on, it’s the Washington Commanders. They’re building a new culture while maintaining Terry McLaurin and Zach Ertz as the two reliable veteran playmakers to help rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels adjust in the league. With Noah Brown likely heading to the market, the Commanders could use some more veteran insurance like Kupp to help stretch the field and create separation in the aerial attack.

New England Patriots

Meanwhile, Kupp could be open to joining a team that is in the rebuilding stage. After hiring Mike Vrabel, the Patriots might be the next team to have a cultural shift themselves. The team is still in the market for a potential Tee Higgins signing but trading for Cooper Kupp shouldn’t keep them out of the conversations. There have been AJ Brown trade rumors as well so perhaps if the Patriots could make all three moves happen, this would set up rookie Drake Maye for the long-term.
