Towson Handles Hofstra With Ease 68-47

January 17, 2023 by Maryland Sports Blog

Towson took care of business against Hofstra in the early afternoon of Martin Luther King Jr. day. I can comfortably say this was the most enjoyable game game I’ve seen the Tigers play to this point of the season, despite a rough start. Hofstra took an early 13-3 lead and it looked like they were on their way to handing the Tigers another head-scratching blowout loss. However, it was clear the boys of Baltimore were tired of letting teams run all over them and decided to do something about it after the first media timeout.

Having seen how the last few games had gone (excluding Monmouth), I decided to hop in the shower to get ready for my engagement shoot at this point as I didn’t think the game would be too enjoyable. When I came out I did a double take at my TV screen, seeing Hofstra’s 13-3 lead get flipped into a 17-13 Towson advantage.

At that point the game was all Tigers. Hofstra could never cut their deficit below 4 as Towson poured on solid, efficient offense. After a 10-turnover first half, the Tigers cleaned up their act in the 2nd act, giving up only one turnover. The three-headed monster of Holden, Timberlake and Thompson took command, with Thompson in particular having a monster game on the defensive side of the ball.

Towson shot 45% from the field, while holding Hofstra to 32.8% and most notably holding pre-season POTY Aaron Estrada to just 10 points. I’m getting myself amped up again just thinking about how good that defensive performance was. If Towson can take that sort of effort into the rest of the season they have a real shot at salvaging their pre-season expectations. The only thing that matters for them from here on out is consistency, they have to have it.

The Tigers next two games are on the road against North Carolina A&T and Elon; two games that should be wins. I just hope they bring the same effort down south that they did at home.
