Towson Offense Struggles. Defense Struggles in Loss to Maryland

September 20, 2025 by Maryland Sports Blog

The Towson Tigers made the trip down to College Park this past Saturday looking to build on their momentum. Unfortunately they came up on the wrong side of this one for their first loss on the season. The Tigers fell 44-17 and brings their record to 2-1.

With a young quarterback like Andrew Indorf, there’s gonna be some growing pains. He did have some trouble throwing the ball (12/25/ 145 yards/ 1 touchdown/ 1 INT). The Terps took away the run game and forced the Tigers to beat them through the air. Nathan Kent finished the game and threw a touchdown on 2 completions for 85 yards. Indorf faced a lot of pressure and was sacked 3 times. Indorf has been sacked 9 times already on the season.

Malik Washington tore up the Towson secondary with 261 yards on 16 completions. He threw a touchdown but did also throw an INT. He added a rushing touchdown for good measure to cap off a stellar performance. His lone passing touchdown went to Shaleak Knotts. Octavian Smith led the Terps with 4 catches for 104 yards.

The Terps shut down the running game as they gained only 51 yards on 26 carries. Kemarrion Battles lead the way with 7 attempts for 16 yards. Towson has been able to run the ball well but when the run game is taken away it’s tough to win being one dimensional.

Maryland went the first 2 games without a rushing touchdown. Today they punched in 3 rushing touchdowns. Iverson Howard had 61 yards on 15 attempts, while the 3 touchdowns belonged to DeJuan Williams, Malik Washington, and Nolan Ray. Maryland had 42 carries in total for 152 yards. Not bad for your first 3 rushing touchdowns on the season.

Jaceon Doss lead the team in receiving yards with 1 catch for 84 yards and a score. Lukkas Londono also had a touchdown as he had 2 catches for 21 yards. Washington’s only touchdown pass went to Shaleak Knotts. Octavian Smith led the Terps with 4 catches for 104 yards.

Towson’s defense struggled with making big plays all day. Kaden White lead the charge with 7 total tackles along with a TFL and a sack. Branson Peters got in on the action with 2 tackles for loss. JR Stegall provided the big play for the defense with a INT.

Carlton Smith led the Terp defense with 6 total tackles and an half TFL and half sack. Zahir Mathis and Sidney Stewart both added sacks for the Terps defense. La’khi Roland snagged an interception to go along with it.

The Tigers will have to shake it off and get ready for their first home game of the season. Week 4 and the Tigers are playing their first home game at Unitas Stadium. This week the Tigers welcome the Youngstown State Penguins. The Penguins roll in with a 2-1 record with wins over Mercyhurst and Robert Morris and a loss against Michigan State.

Youngstown State is led by Junior quarterback Beau Brungard. So far on the year 478 yards and 3 touchdowns on the year. He is also a dual threat and has really torn it up on the ground. He’s run for 426 yards and 6 touchdowns. 4 of them came against Robert Morris.

The Penguins really rely on Brungard to carry the rock so stopping him has to be a priority. Jaden Gilbert and Tahir Mills are both guys who can be effective out of the backfield. Max Tomczak, Ky Wilson and Mike Solomon are all guys on the outside that will look to stretch the field vertically and block for Brungard.

The Tigers will need to look out for a few guys on the defenses: Dayne Hodge, Carson Marshall, Makai Shahid, Justin Wimpye and Michael Wells. The Penguins defense has been good and will look to disrupt Indorf and the Tigers offense.

This is a good test for the Tigers. Youngstown has been very good in the past and had been able to punch above its weight class. The Tigers will need to be good in all 3 assets of the game in order to get the win.

Kick off from Unitas Stadium is set for 6 pm. GOH TIGERS!!
