Towson Wins Big on Senior Day. Clash With Campbell To Wrap up Season

November 23, 2024 by Maryland Sports Blog

The end of the football season is a tough one to swallow at all levels. Never again will it be the same group of guys in the locker room. Everything that happens that season stays there and is lost over time. The memories will always remain. Some guys will go on to play professionally, most will not. Many guys are likely playing in their final football games of their playing careers. Hours and hours spent on practices, training, travel, film all culminate over the course of a few hours. For some of Towson’s football players, this is the last hurrah.

The Towson Tigers moved to 6-5 on the season with a resounding 31-13 win over the North Carolina A&T Aggies this past Saturday. Senior Day is always an emotional day and the Tigers were able to get one last win at Unitas Stadium. The Tigers jumped out to the lead early and were all over the Aggies, who didn’t even score until midway through the end of the game. Devin Matthews started off the scoring with a 20 yard touchdown to make it 7-0. Keegan Vaughn added a field goal to make it 10-0 in the 1st. Matthew’s rushing touchdown pretty much put the game in the bag. Tyrell Greene Jr and Ike Daniels both had rushing touchdowns on the day (both from 2 yards out) to make it 31-0. The Aggies finally got on the board with passing touchdowns from Justin Fomby to Cortez Lane and Antoine Bell.

Towson didn’t need to do much in the passing game, but Sean Brown had a pretty good day going 23 of 35 for 251 and a touchdown. Justin Fomby finished with 2 passing touchdowns and 176 yards passing on 14 completions.

A&T’s run game struggled all day long and with 35 carries for 109 yards and no touchdowns is not gonna get the job done. Shimique Blizzard did most of the heavy lifting but only ended up with 41 yards on 13 carries. Towson had almost 200 yards rushing and 3 touchdowns all from different players (Devin Matthews, Ike Daniels, and Tyrell Greene Jr). Both Matthews and Greene had okay days on the ground but the combined effort led the way for the Tigers all game long. Greene finished with 74 yards and Matthews had 55.

The receiving game on both sides had a few big moments and 3 touchdowns combined. For Towson, Carter Runyon led the team in receiving yards with 81 and Devin Matthews scored their lone receiving touchdown. Antoine Bell and Cortez lane cashed in for the Aggies.

Defensively the Aggies were led by Kade Moledor who had 16 total tackles and a half TFL. Mitchell Etheridge recovered a fumble for their only turnover of the day. Towson’s defense feasted all day to the tune of 6 sacked, a fumble recovery and an INT. Xavier Terry had 7 tackles and the forced fumble and fumble recovery. Dion Crews-Harris, Daniel Raymond, Rodney Roane and Ernie Smith all getting involved in the backfield and making Fumboy’s day that much more difficult.

The Tigers have wrapped up their home slate for the season. No more games at Unitas until next season. With a winning season in sight the Tigers travel to Buies Creek, NC for a showdown with the Campbell University Camels. It’s been a tough season for them, coming in at 3-8 and near the bottom of the conference standings. 3 straight losses have them spiraling and will look to end the season on a high note.

The Camels have used 2 quarterbacks this year. Right now Mike Chandler, their sensational Redshirt Senior transfer  from Lamar has taken over the starting job. With 11 passing touchdowns and 4 INT’s he seems to be more comfortable and has been able to make some good things happen for them despite their losing streak. He’s also been able to get it done on the ground with 466 yards and 3 touchdowns. JJ Cowan and Mark Biggins are a couple of guys to watch in their backfield.

Their big play receiver is Sincere Brown, with 964 yards on 57 catches and 11 touchdowns. VJ Wilkins has chipped in 6 touchdowns of his own and 476 yards receiving.

Defensively, Jalen Brooks is their Swiss Army knife. He leads the team with 101 tackles, 7 TFL and 4 sacks. He has an INT, 5 pass break ups, and 2 fumble recoveries. The man is literally doing it all for them. Jojo Pace has a couple on INT’s on the year as well as Da’Quan Johnson. Lakeem Rudolph and Keevan Bailey and Brandon Guzman will also look to make big plays for the Camel’s defense.

The Tigers will need one more stellar team effort and some good football in order to end the year on a high note. A 7-5 would be a sign of good things coming for the future of the program. GO TIGERS!
