San Francisco 49ers Pro Bowl left tackle Trent Williams is opening up about the cancer battle that cost him the entire 2019 season.
Then a member of the Washington Redskins, Williams first noticed a growth on his head in 2013. However, team doctors said it was not a serious issue.
But in 2019, Williams had the growth removed and it turned out to be cancerous. He missed the 2019 season, first because of a dispute with Washington’s medical staff about how they handled his condition and then due to postsurgical soreness which was exacerbated by his helmet.
In an upcoming episode of the “I Am Athlete” podcast, Williams describes his cancer battle more in-depth, including the moment he Googled the name of the doctor he was slated to see and realized it was an oncologist.
“Once I Googled that, I didn’t even tell my mom,” Williams said. “I just closed the door. It was probably 3 o’clock in the evening. I just sat in there and cried myself to sleep, on and off. I didn’t come out until noon the next day”
49ers’ Pro-Bowl OT Trent Williams is opening up to “@IAMATHLETEpod ” about the biggest fight of his life — when he was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer and was told death was a very real outcome.

Fortunately for Williams, he was able to make a recovery and after being traded to the 49ers in April 2020, immediately resumed being elite. He made the Pro Bowl each of the last two seasons and was named All-Pro in 2021.
