The Washington Commanders used their first Day 2 selection on Illinois defensive tackle Jer’Zhan “Johnny” Newton. Newton is a two-time All-American and the 2023 Big Ten Conference Defensive Player of the Year.
One question was why the Commanders selected another defensive tackle. Washington has Jonathan Allen and Daron Payne on the roster and capable backups John Ridgeway and Phidarian Mathis. The answer was easy: New general manager Adam Peters chose the best player available.
