New Philadelphia Phillies outfielder Nick Castellanos has developed a reputation in recent years of doing good things under unfortunate circumstances during games.
Most famously, it was Castellanos’ home run that interrupted Thom Brennaman’s on-air apology for homophobic comments in 2020, a clip that went viral and became immortalized. Today, Castellanos cut in on a similarly sobering broadcasting moment.
During this afternoon’s spring training game between the Phillies and Toronto Blue Jays, Castellanos got his first hit with his new team while the Toronto broadcasters were talking about pitching coach Pete Walker’s recent DUI arrest.

The dude has an uncanny ability to rake while bad news is being discussed. It’s possibly the greatest unintentional bit going on in sports today.
Devastated we are no longer in the sort of movie-making environment where this could inspire a dark comedy about a front office who discovers a player gets a hit whenever unfortunate news is read on air and has to go to great lengths to find new material for him https://t.co/QWRzW58WTR

The amazing thing is, Castellanos only just turned 30 and has been one of the most consistent players in the league over the last five seasons. He should be productive for years to come.
That means we might get several more awkward broadcasting moments like this in the future.
