Vote for Jayden Daniels as NFL Rookie of the Week for his play against the NY Giants

Jayden Daniels put in another very good performance this week against the Giants, though it may have seemed a bit unremarkable since it featured no more than 2 or 3 incredible passes and no particularly spectacular runs. This week, with the Commanders never trailing and in possession of the ball for the final 2:46, the ending was rather anti-climactic and the outcome was never in any serious doubt. Still, it was an impressive performance by the rookie QB.

Daniels protected the ball as usual with no fumbles or interceptions in this road game against the Giants; in fact, he has only two turnovers on 524 offensive plays for the season, and hasn’t had an interception since the Week 5 game against the Browns. Washington’s incredibly low total of 3 turnovers through 9 weeks of play is just another one of many records tied to Daniels’ rookie season and the accomplishments of the Commanders team generally.

This week, Daniels completed 68.2% of his passes while his yards per attempt average (9.5) was the second-highest of the season (behind 11.0 in Week 3 vs Cincinnati).

He had 209 yards and 2 touchdowns through the air (128.8 passer rating) and added 35 rushing yards.

Behind good blocking by his offensive line, Daniels avoided getting sacked by the Giants, who entered the game with the most sacks in the NFL. Surprisingly, and due in part to Daniels’ great pocket awareness and mobility, New York was one of only three NFL defenses to be held without a sack this week.

The most impressive pass of the game was probably the second touchdown pass to Terry McLaurin on a play that started with 11 seconds remaining in the first half.

Another impressive pass went to Noah Brown — an beautiful layered throw down the middle of the field.

Last week, former All Pro linebacker JJ Watt made the case that Jayden Daniels should be not just voted Rookie of the Week or named FedEx Air Player of the Week again, but that he should be the top candidate for the NFL regular season MVP award.

This week, retired quarterback Alex Smith makes the case:

“What he’s done for this organization as a rookie is incredible.”

Now that we’ve seen Caleb Williams and Jayden Daniels on the same field in the same game, there can be no doubt that Daniels is the most dynamic and exciting rookie quarterback in the league.

For my entire adult life, I’ve never spoke about this team in this way.

Kyle Brandt: We need people to see Jayden Daniels; he is the best thing going right now – the coolest, most fun, most astonishing thing. The best show, right now! It’s not the Vikings; it’s not the Chiefs – it is the Commanders offense, and the Commanders as a whole, and I have never said that in my life.

Daniels’ outstanding play has helped the Commanders to grab and hold onto sole possession of first-place in the NFC East after nine weeks of play.
