Washington Commanders Could Hire Former Eagles OC

February 5, 2024 by Last Word On Pro Football

Washington Commanders Brian Johnson

Washington Commanders could hire former Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator, Brian Johnson for the same position after getting Dan Quinn as their next head coach. A lot of news is surrounding Washington as they have a lot of candidates on the table to choose from. Johnson is set to interview with the Commanders for the vacant position. This isn’t the only candidate that’s meeting with them.

Former Arizona Cardinal head coach, Kliff Kingsbury has already met with the Commanders and is now a strong candidate for the offensive coordinator position. His contract talks with the Raiders fell through after contract negotiations. Las Vegas Raiders head coach, Antonio Pierce was expected for him to join, but the move to back away shocked the NFL. Now, many candidates are emerging and there shouldn’t be a surprise if another appears.

It’s possibly going to be a tough position for Washington and Quinn to choose for their offensive coordinator position. The news probably wouldn’t excite Commanders fans, but it leaves them with numerous options now. Johnson was with Philadelphia for the past three seasons and received a promotion last year after Shane Steichen left to take over as head coach for the Colts.

It’s still a possibility, that Johnson can start fresh and potentially develop the next franchise quarterback for Washington. Either J.J. McCarthy or Caleb Williams are those possible options. It would definitely help Johnson back on his feet for an NFL job, though after struggling to develop Jalen Hurts.

Washington Commanders Could Hire Brian Johnson as Offensive Coordinator

He Could Start New in Washington

After a 4-13 end to their past season, they are very likely to part ways with current offensive coordinator, Eric Bienemy. Bienemy is on the move already speaking to the Raiders about their OC vacancy. This would open the door if Johnson lands with the Commanders, he has some promising pieces to work with. Terry McLaurin is still considerably one of the most reliable wide receivers in the league.

Also, Jahan Dotson is a promising young pass-catcher who has numerous years ahead of him. The Commanders have promising running back, Brian Robinson, who’s made his strides to be a dynamic player. It looks like Johnson would be good to go starting new with the potential of this team. The only thing lacking right now is finding the next franchise quarterback for the Commanders.

This will be something that will be up to Dan Quinn and possibly Johnson if he’s hired. Despite his fallout with the Eagles, he could be a different coach next season under the new system. The way how the Commanders remodel their staff shows the true promise of the team’s potential. So this says that any offensive coordinator going under this new system would benefit from it.

New System Would Reap the Rewards

After a promising duo between Johnson and Hurts, it all fell apart and things just didn’t work out. It doesn’t rule out the last the league could hear about Johnson if Washington doesn’t hire him. He obviously caught the eye of Nick Sirianni and Philadelphia in 2020 when he was hired. This could be the same scenario for Quinn, but Washington has numerous options.

It’s likely that Kingsbury could be the next offensive coordinator for Washington, but this doesn’t mean Johnson doesn’t have options left. He could take a year off or another team can call him up. Anything can happen at this point as Johnson is on the hunt for a new job to reap the rewards under a fresh system.
