The Washington Commanders are losing another pending free agent according to a late night report from ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler. Offensive tackle Cornelius Lucas has reportedly agreed to a two-year deal worth up to $10 million.
Lucas has been with Washington since 2020 when Ron Rivera took over as head coach and head of personnel. He has been the team’s swing tackle and started last year splitting series with rookie LT Brandon Coleman for the first half of the season.
Washington’s offensive line is getting a big addition tomorrow when the reported trade for Houston Texans LT Laremy Tunsil can be finalized. Coleman was drafted to play left tackle, but many people projected him to play guard in the NFL. Tunsils’ addition gives Washington flexibility to move him there, or to try him at right tackle with the current starter Andrew Wylie moving inside.
Most of Washington’s offensive line is returning after the team used free agency and the draft to make changes at three spots. RG Sam Cosmi tore his ACL during the playoffs, and he’s expected to miss most, or all, of the upcoming season. Trent Scott was a depth lineman who showed he could play both guard and receiver when needed, and should be re-signed.
