Kicker news!
The Washington Commanders had two open roster spots after placing RB Austin Ekeler on injured reserve, and releasing former 1st round pick Emmanuel Forbes Jr. on Saturday. They filled one of those spots today by signing kicker Zane Gonzalez from the practice squad. He was elevated for the third time this season yesterday, but had his worst game of the season, missing two field goals. The team couldn’t elevate him anymore, and he’s now on the 53-man roster, and not able to be signed by another team.
Gonzalez was perfect in his previous two games, but missed from 46 and 52 yards against the Titans. He was 6/6 on extra points as Washington went on to a 42-19 victory Gonzalez was signed after Austin Seibert suffered a right hip injury. Seibert returned against the Cowboys and missed two extra points and a field goal. He was quickly placed on IR with a new groin injury.
Dan Quinn expressed confidence in Gonzalez while talking to reporters today. He mentioned his first two games kicking, and how he has performed in practice. Quinn didn’t mention bringing in competition at the position, but that is always an option during the bye week. For now, Zane Gonzalez is Washington’s kicker, and Austin Seibert will remain on IR for at least the next three games.
