Washington Commanders Roster Moves: Chris Rodriguez gets exclusive rights tender

The Washington Commanders have started re-signing players before the new league year starts on Wednesday at 4 p.m. The legal tampering period starts on Monday at noon, and we will be hearing about a lot more players getting re-signed before other teams can negotiate with their agents.

Washington has already re-signed kicker Zane Gonzalez and LB Bobby Wagner, released DT Jonathan Allen, and traded for WR Deebo Samuel. The team also announced that they have extended an exclusive rights tender to third-year RB Chris Rodriguez. This means they like the young back enough to bring him back, but with minimal commitment and salary on their end. He has to sign the tender, or he can’t play this year.

Chris Rodriguez was the #4 RB on the depth chart and spent time on the practice squad. Jos playing time went down from his rookie season. He played in nine games and had 51 carries for 173 yards and 2 TDs. He only had one catch for 12 yards. He will join Brian Robinson Jr and Austin Ekeler who are both entering contract years. Jeremy McNichols was the #4 RB last year, but he’s a free agent next week. Michael Wiley was on the practice squad last season and has been signed to a reserve/future contract. Adam Peters is expected to bring in more running backs through free agency and next month’s draft. Rodriguez will get a chance to earn more playing time, but he is still at the bottom of the depth chart.
